As we prepare you for the tour you are handed a hi-vis vest and a hardhat... We will walk the distance between the mill and the shop and start at the south end where the logs enter the mill...
You will notice that there are actually two mills here... a large log side we call Mill 1 (because it has been here the longest... since 1971) and the smaller log line (Mill 2 - since 1989). Our smaller log line generally processes logs up to 12" in diameter and the large log side processes logs larger than 12".
If you look towards the river you will notice the Mill 2 log deck which is the beginning of our smaller log line. We use this production line to buck the logs and remove the bark.
As you enter the small log side (Mill 2) you will notice the neatly organized equipment. The first machine after the Barker is our Kockums Cancar Canter with the inline Vertical Saw Arbor Edger (VSAE) behind it. This machine is particularly versatile as it takes a single log and squares it off with spline heads on the top and bottom as well as each side. The VSAE then saws the cant into any number of profiles depending on how we program our computer.
After the lumber and timbers exit the Canter and VSAE, they are sorted at the Gate Sorter. Lumber that is ready to be trimmed and piled is sent to the Trimmer, while lumber that needs resawn or edged is sent to the West Plains Resaw and/or the Bottom Arbor Edger before going to the Trimmer.
Once the lumber is properly sawn, edged and trimmed it ends up at the Dropsorter where it is hand-piled and prepared for kiln drying.
In Mill 1 you will notice our traditional headrig and carriage with it's single cut 14" x 47' circumference Bandsaw. The lumber line on this side consists of our 250 HP 84" McDonough Headrig. We cut the logs off of a 4-bunk 20' long Corley Carriage with out-turns to our Mill 1 Edger.
The Headrig also cuts cants to the Mill 1 Resaw for further breakdown on our thin-kerf bands (18 gauge). The twin 31' 2x100 horsepower McDonough Resaw is our newest piece of equipment on Mill 1. It features twin 8"x 31' saws on 54" wheels and has a re-entry deck to maximize recovery of timber items. Most lumber then goes through our Sorter Station and ends up at the Dropsorter.
This is our large log side. We have a unique position in the lumber industry because we are able to utilize every portion of the log for it's best use. Our posts, timbers, bridge decking and railway ties go to the Timberdeck where they are piled for shipment.
Although some of our customers buy lumber in it's rough green state or as timbers, most of our wood goes to the Dry Kilns. We have five steam injection kilns that provide us with a steady flow of high quality dry wood. The steam injection from our boilers is particularly useful for our specialty items. The steam is injected into the drying chamber and is used to control the seasoning defects in the drying process. The lumber goes from the dry kilns to our storage sheds and is then run at the planer. The Planer Department has a Feeder-man, Planer, Grading Station, Trimmer, and Planer Chain. We have another Log Yard on the north end too.
High standards. High quality. It comes naturally.
