Western Larch (Larix occidentalis) is another well known tree species the Kootenay Interior wet belt region has to offer. Douglas Fir and Western Larch share a lot of similar traits but some differences are aparent.Western Larches are different from most conifers because they're deciduous, their leaves are needle-like, light green, and very slender. They turn bright yellow in the fall, leaving the pale orange-brown shoots bare until the next spring.
The wood is tough and durable, but also flexible in thin strips, and is particularly valued for lumber, fine veneer, interior and exterior finishing, mine timbers, fuel wood, pulpwood, and chemical extracts. Small larch poles are widely used for rustic fencing.
