Western Hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) are excellent rejuvenators and thrive in mixed stands of timber throughout the Kootenay Interior wet belt region. Western Hemlock is shade-tolerant, they trim themselves as they grow to produce a tall, branch-free trunk. This growth characteristic in Western Hemlock translates into large amounts of Clear and Structurally Sound lumber from the log.
Western Hemlock trees have a straight uniform grain, fine texture and a uniform color, ranging from creamy white to light gold. Western Hemlock is valued for its good working properties and can be machined easily.
